Jackie Scruggs

Jackie Dean Scruggs, our beloved brother, uncle and friend, passed away peacefully Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014, at a hospital in Dallas. Service: 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 24, at Birdville Baptist Church, 3141 Carson St., Haltom City. Interment: 1:30 p.m. in Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery. Visitation: 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church. Jackie was born Aug. 25, 1950, in Lake Worth to Robert Odell and Dorothy Faye Scruggs. In 1959, Jackie and his family moved to Bedford, where he made many friends playing football with the Mid-Cities Pee Wee Football Association and baseball in the Tri-Cities Baseball Association. He attended L.D. Bell High School before joining the Army in 1967 and serving in Germany and Vietnam. He was a life member of the VFW and member of American Legion Post 516. Jackie started coaching Pee Wee Football at Richland Youth Association in 1980 and was commissioner of RYA Football from 1984-1989. He also ran RYA's concession until his health forced him to retire in 2011. Jackie was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Ronnie Scruggs; and two nieces, Jamie Renee and Shannon Scruggs. Survivors: Brothers, Carroll Scruggs of Fort Worth, Zearl Scruggs of Fort Worth and Robert Scruggs (Susan) of Waxahachie; nephews, Darrell Scruggs of Hurst, Kyle Scruggs of Peachtree City, Ga., Steve Scruggs of Ruidoso, N.M., and Mike Scruggs of Waxahachie; nieces, Kelly Hale of Red Oak and Sheryl Scruggs of Medford, Ore.; many cousins, great-nephews and great-nieces; and countless friends.
